KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Twenty-four of the 46 Kansas City, Kansas, homicides from 2006 remain unsolved.
KCK police historically have had homicide clearance rates exceeding 70 percent or 80 percent. But the department has cleared only 22, about 48 percent of its homicides from last year.
Police said a large number of the cases were drug related. They said these are more difficult to solve. Other cases lacked evidence or witnesses.
Investigators said another factor is a backlog of forensic evidence that still needs to be processed.
Three of the homicides were domestic. Others included a shaken baby death, a woman killed in a dog attack, and a girl killed in a fireworks-related fire.
